Eczema is probably one of the most common skin complaints, you might think it’s a childhood ailment, but it may last into adulthood and can be irritating and uncomfortable, and at its worst lead to infection.
What causes eczema and what can be done about it?
Eczema is also known as dermatitis and is a skin condition characterised by patches of red and itchy skin which can become inflamed and infected. The word eczema comes from the Greek word ‘Ekzein’ which means ‘to boil’ which is interesting because acute eczema often becomes hot and painful.
Like many skin conditions, eczema can vary from person to person and more extreme cases can be very painful and debilitating, the irritation and itching can seem uncontrollable and skin becomes very sensitive.
Eczema is predominantly found in babies and young children, this is believed to be due to their genetics and other environmental influences. There are a few different types including Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis and Dyshidrotic Eczema, but the most common type is Atopic which means that it is caused by allergies. In many cases this goes hand in hand with asthma.
Some skin experts believe that eczema is caused when the skin fails to produce enough oil causing gaps in the top protective layer of the skin. Other causes of eczema may be an overactive immune system which causes the body to attack itself in response to various allergens.
Don’t despair though, there are lots of things that you can do to improve your eczema. As you might imagine one of the main priorities is to ensure that your skin gets the moisture it requires. The best way to do this is with a gentle moisturizer which will help to restore the balance of moisture to your skin. It’s important to avoid over-perfumed or complicated moisturizing products as these may further irritate your skin. A natural, calming moisturizer is best and must be used on a regular basis for optimum results.
