What are the Main Causes of Acne?

Often thought to be part of teenage life, acne can affect you at any time and at its worst can make life miserable and affect your confidence. Have you ever wondered what acne is and what causes it?

Acne is a skin condition which is characterized by the appearance of red blemishes on the face and neck, and it can even be found on the back and chest. In milder cases it can be no more than a collection of small pimples, but more severe cases have large boils and blemishes which can be unsightly and irritating. Acne appears because the hair follicles in the skin become blocked and the skin produces an excess of sebum, combining these two factors creates the blemishes and spots that identify acne.

There are a variety of causes of acne:

Hormonal activity is a major cause of acne and it is no surprise that 80% of acne cases occur in women. In particular hormonal changes which occur during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and even the menopause can trigger acne. This often comes as a surprise to many women who assume that their days will be blemish free once they have left their teenage years.

Acne commonly occurs during the teenage years and in fact it’s estimated that 8 out of 10 teenagers will suffer at some point.

It may surprise you to know that it’s the male hormone, Testosterone that is the major cause of teenage acne, as it seems to increase the production of sebum leading to the appearance of spots, blemishes and boils.

Whilst no concrete genetic link has been established, dermatologists agree that if a parent has suffered with acne, then their offspring being affected increase. If both parents have had issues with acne in their lives, then it is more than likely that children will suffer, particularly as they enter the teenage years.

You might think that there isn’t a lot that you can do to relieve acne, we would advise you to use products that are specifically developed for this skin condition as they tend to be milder and less likely to irritate the skin.
