Using Antioxidants to Combat Ageing
Using Antioxidants to Combat Ageing
Ok, so the time has come to talk about antioxidants and how they can help to combat the ageing process. You may have heard antioxidants talked about in the media, but perhaps you aren’t entirely sure what they are.
Free radicals are the chemicals that speed up the ageing process of your skin. The role of antioxidants is to limit the production of those free radicals, they also help to increase the production of collagen which is vital for firm, healthy looking skin.
Antioxidants that are commonly used in skincare are Resveratrol, Lycopene, Green Tea, Grape Seed and Coffee Berry. They also include many of the vitamins we have discussed in previous posts too. (Add link to Vitamin Post here)
The Benefits of Antioxidants
Antioxidants are popular because just like their vitamin counterparts they have a wide range of benefits. These properties include:
Anti inflammatory – Antioxidants can help to reduce inflammation in skin and also reduce redness. These are common problems that tend to occur as your skin ages. Green Tea, for example helps to reduce inflammation and promotes smoother skin.
Firm the skin – Research is ongoing to find out whether antioxidants can actually reverse the ageing process, which of course makes them a key ingredient in age repair skin products. Products containing antioxidants will typically smooth the top layer of skin giving a more youthful appearance.
Reduce wrinkles – We all remember that cry from the bathroom the minute the first wrinkle is spotted! Whilst it is impossible to get rid of wrinkles without going down the surgical route, creams containing antioxidants will certainly plump out skin, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Sun damage – We all love the sun, but the sun does not always love our skin. One of the key factors in ageing is sun damage which can make us look older than we are. Over exposure to sun will make our skin dry and damaged. Antioxidants won’t repair the sun damage, but they will increase blood flow to the skin and facilitate the growth of new skin cells.

When should you start protecting your skin against anti-ageing?
You should start protecting your skin against the effects of ageing sooner rather than later. You might think that it’s something you can leave until you are in your 40s or even 50s but many skin experts advise that you start from your mid-twenties. It won’t do your skin any harm, providing you use good quality products, but it also helps to prepare your skin for a time when it is drier and more prone to wrinkles and signs of ageing. Starting earlier also means that you get into a good routine. The important thing is to choose the right anti-ageing products which use antioxidants to keep and maintain your skin.
Artesana has developed a range of products which meet this criteria, check out these links below and before you know it, you’ll be will on your way to softer, younger looking skin.
