Natural Ingredient of the Month: Lavender

Natural Ingredient of the Month: Lavender

As you know at Artesana we pride ourselves on our natural ingredients. We thought it might be interesting to spotlight a different natural ingredient each month and highlight its properties and why we use it in our products. We love to share all of the benefits of our natural skincare range!

This month’s natural ingredient is Lavender. It’s probably one of the most popular flowers used in many beauty and skincare products. It’s clear that Lavender has a lot of benefits to offer for both your skin and your general health.

Why Lavender?

Lavender Essential Oil is the by-product of the Lavender flower, it is usually extracted through steam distillation, and predominantly used in skincare products. It has two overall benefits in the skincare world, it is a great anti-inflammatory and it also has anti-bacterial properties.

Its anti-inflammatory properties mean that Lavender is suitable for use in any kind of skin product that aims to relieve irritation, itchiness or redness. This is why you often find Lavender in products aimed at providing relief for Eczema, skin rashes and dry skin. As these products are used topically they should provide reasonably rapid relief from itchiness, associated pain and discomfort.

As an anti-bacterial Lavender has had success dealing with acne and related conditions. It gives skin the perfect cleanse and rids it of the build-up of bacteria which is responsible for break-outs and blemishes. Other non-natural skin treatment preparations can disrupt the natural balance of the skin, creating additional irritation as their ingredients are too harsh for sensitive skin. In contrast Lavender is gentle on skin and helps to soothe irritation.

Commercially produced skincare products are highly perfumed, but most of their fragrance is created using artificial scents. Lavender is popular in natural skincare products because of its pleasant fragrance which is subtle and believed to have additional relaxation inducing qualities. This is why Lavender Essential Oil is also burned to encourage deep relaxation and anxiety relief.

We love Lavender at Artesana and we use it in a variety of products. Two products that Lavender features in primarily are our Lavender Hydrosol and our Amazing Salves with Lavender.

Lavender Hydrosol

Last year we introduced a range of Hydrosols, which we explained further in this post (Insert link to hydrosols post).

Our Lavender Hydrosol is particularly suitable for soothing aging skin and helping with bites and minor skin irritations. It is easy to apply because it comes in a spray bottle, so just the right amount of product is dispensed. Alternatively, Lavender Hydrosol can be used as a room fragrance, or sprayed onto your pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Amazing Salves Lavender

Amazing Salves was the product that launched Artesana and still remains one of our most popular products today. This salve lives up to its name with a range of amazing uses including soothing, moisturizing, strengthening and protecting skin. The addition of Lavender Essential Oil gives it a delicate fragrance and increases its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. This salve is so gentle it can be used on children and it is easily portable so you can keep it in your handbag ready to use when you need it.
